Information About Summer Math Work

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,
As we approach summer break, we want to extend our warmest wishes for a relaxing and enjoyable vacation! While summer is a great time to rest and recharge, it also offers a valuable opportunity to keep math skills sharp ahead of the new school year. To support continued learning over the summer, we are offering optional but highly recommended math practice options for students entering all middle school grades. These resources are designed to be flexible, engaging, and effective at helping students retain and strengthen their understanding of math.
Recommended Summer Math Practice Menu:
1. Khan Academy
Khan Academy offers free, self-paced online lessons and exercises that align with grade-level math standards. Students can log in with their school Google accounts (https://www.khanacademy.org/math/get-ready-courses) and choose the course they will be taking next school year.
2. The Big 5 Summer Work Packets
The “Big 5 Use it or Lose it” summer work includes skills carefully picked by your future math teacher that are essential to success in the upcoming school year. The skills reviewed in the “Big 5” are concepts that you have been taught and practiced throughout this past school year. An electronic copy of the “Big 5” summer work can be found here.
Additional Notes:
You should not use calculators to solve problems, but you may use them to check your answers.
In addition to the summer work, it would be beneficial to continue practicing math facts. This can be done by playing math fact fluency games online (such as Kakooma), using flashcards, or completing practice worksheets.
While none of these options are required, students who participate will start the year feeling more confident and prepared. We strongly encourage all students to engage with one of these practice opportunities over the summer.
Wishing you a wonderful summer and looking forward to a great year ahead!
Sincerely,
The JRMS and HKMS Math Departments
