Outreach

Outreach is a club that is a subcommittee of student council; however any students that are interested in participating can be a part of it.  We will meet twice monthly before school.  Our focus is to help those in our community and throughout the world who are in need.  Last year we donated over 4,000 items to the Redding Food Bank, collected left over Halloween candy and sent it to troops overseas, ran a clothing drive, toy drive, book drive, and a used sporting goods drive. We had students participate in St. Baldrick’s day, an event to raise money and awareness for cancer research by getting your head shaved or participating in Locks for Love, raising over $12,000 in less than a month.  We ended the year with a contest to collect change for an organization called Pennies for Peace to aid education efforts in Afghanistan.  This year we hope to continue helping those in need by building a house for a family in the Dominican Republic!  Come check us out!  See Mrs. Zietz for more information.

Social Committee

The social committee at John Read is comprised of student council members from all four grades who assist in planning and organizing the socials in conjunction with the PTA.  The committee meets bi weekly to discuss all aspects of the socials: the DJ, food and drink, various games that are played, etc.  Students get feedback from their fellow peers on what was successful from the previous socials and what could use some improvement.  Mr. Shalett chairs the committee.

Student Council

What is Student Council at JRMS and what is our goal?
Student leadership development is the process of involving students in meaningful ways both in and beyond the classroom. It is providing opportunities for students to demonstrate their talents, skills, and interests while continuing to develop new skills. It is also about giving students more ownership of the programs they attend.  Student participation, in the JRMS Student Council creates a sense of ownership within the student population.  This ownership allows students to feel empowered and independent.  The goal of the JRMS Student Council is to provide these opportunities for students.

The JRMS Student Council includes a Student Council President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, a Faculty Advisor and numerous home room representatives.  The Student Council meets up to 3 times per month.  Sub committees of the JRMS Student Council include:  Social Committee, Communications Committee, Outreach Program, Conservation Committee, Spirit Committee and School Store.  All members of the JRMS student body are encouraged to participate in these programs but the primary responsibility of these programs rest on the Student Council of JRMS.

Morning Gym

The A.M. Open Gym program allows students at all grade levels an opportunity to participate in physical activities before the regular school day.  There are times throughout the year that the program is only offered to individual grade levels due to the amount of interest in the program or the use of the gym by other programs.  The students are involved in games such as Four-Square, Knock-Out (Modified Basketball game), Regulation Basketball games, Regulation Volleyball games, etc. The A.M. Open Gym program takes place on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday of each week unless there are other conflicts with gym availability.

All students are asked to follow the school rules set forth in the Student Handbook (i.e., no gum chewing, no physical contact with other students, etc.)  .

All students who are interested in participating are called down each day to the gymnasium from other areas of the school (e.g. Cafeteria, Library) and must leave their backpacks, projects, etc. in that area so as to increase the playing area available to the students.  The program begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 8:58 a.m. Students should be dropped off by the side of the Cafeteria.

School Store

Students learn how to inventory, price, and sell products during lunch waves.  Students are involved in the entire process from choice of stock to selling goods and tallying money.  School store works as part of the Student Council, but students do not have to be members of the Council in order to participate.  School store will meet every other Thursday and Friday.  Listen for announcements!

Communications Committee

The student council communications committee is designed to keep the student body and school community informed of important events.  Through the student council website, morning announcements, and paper advertising, members of this committee learn effective communication methods and techniques. Communications committee will meet every other Thursday and Friday.  Listen for announcements!
