Materials

Staff and students at John Read Middle school have access to information resources that include:

  • Reference collection of more than 600 print titles as well as web access to extensive online databases
  • Access to a curriculum specific streaming video library and nearly 800 videotapes
  • Books-on-tape/CD for all required novels (subject to availability)
  • Over 70 current print periodical titles and online access to older periodical articles. Print materials are kept on hand for two years, earlier articles (1970-current) may be accessed through the online databases.

Facilities

The main library area has shelving for 25,000 books and seating for up to 40. Prominent on display are busts of American and English authors and the only known likeness of John Read.

The Reading Room will seat 25 and houses the periodical collection. The Reading Room is used for classes meeting in the LMC during the school day and for quiet reading as allowed.

The Seminar Room is used for small group instruction, faculty team meetings and other school-related meetings. The Seminar Room houses the LMC's professional collection.

The Circulation Area houses the circulation desk, a workroom, the Audio-Visual and Computer head-end equipment and the office of the Director of Learning Resources and Technology and the Network Administrator.

The library computer area has 16 computer stations, a scanner and a printer. Adjacent to the computer area is a copier.

Computers throughout the school access web-based reference and curriculum materials.

Hours

The JRMS Library Media Center is open for student and staff use from 8:05 AM to 5:00 PM for quiet study and reading on school days.

  • Students may come to the LMC as early as 8:05 AM. They must check in through the cafeteria and must have a pass from a teacher. There are "free" (no pass required) days for each grade as follows:

    Grade 8-Mondays
    Grade 7-Tuesdays
    Grade 6-Wednesdays (except when Full Staff meetings occur);
    Grade 5-Thursdays

  • The Library can accommodate up to 30 students each morning before school. Students who need to use the LMC materials will be given first priority. Mrs. Anderheggen is the morning supervisor.
  • Students may come to the LMC after school Monday through Thursday only with prior written permission. After school attendance is limited to 20 students and those with a need to use LMC materials are given first priority. Students must have a written pass, signed by their parent(s) or guardian who are responsible for picking up their children before 5:00 PM.
  • Students may come to the LMC during school hours with the permission of their teachers during class time or homeroom. The LMC welcomes teachers to schedule their classes into the LMC to use the facilities and materials during the school day. The LMC can accommodate up to two classes per class period.

Volunteers

We are fortunate to have the assistance of many parent volunteers who generously donate their time each week.
