Middle School Students:
  • experience rapid biological/physiological change
  • are sensitive social beings; acceptance by peers is very important
  • are intellectually curious; prefer active learning
  • struggle between autonomy and their continuing dependency needs
  • are idealistic and egocentric
  • despite mood swings…are fun!

Transition to Grade 5

Support Programs
  • Tutorial Assistance Program (TAP)– Offers assistance to students having academic difficulty
    • Parent permission is required
    • Program is offered during an FPA period
    • Students can be referred by teachers, parents or Student Assistance Team


  • Student Assistance Team (SAT) – A group of trained, concerned staff members working together to provide early intervention for students
      • Academic concerns
      • Behavioral concerns
      • Social concerns
    • Parents are notified of all referrals to SAT

Student Placement
  • RES staff work with JRMS staff to place current grade 4 students into  eight balanced homeroom sections


  • In mid-August JRMS administrators will assign a 5th grade teacher to each of the eight sections


  • JRMS scheduling team places current grade 4 students into balanced FPA and World Language Exploratory classes

  • 8:00 AM - 8:45 am
  • This is NOT day-care; it is ONLY for students who have a morning appointment with a teacher
  • There will be a $5.00 charge for students dropped off without a scheduled appointment

  • 7:00 AM - 9:00 AM

First Day of School
  • Grade 5 students report to their homeroom


  • Students are assigned locks, lockers, and computer passwords


  • Orientation activities take place in each team


  • Handbook and homework logs are distributed
  • (parent sign-off sheet must be returned)
